By default, the integrated SPI firewall blocks incoming traffic, so you're protected from outside intrusions as soon as you connect. Like the Netgear FR114P, the Linksys firewall can block incoming or outgoing traffic at scheduled times and filter content by URLs or keywords. And if you really want to ensure safety, you can set the firewall to require that Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm be running at all times. With all hardware routers, you need knowledge of the ports and services involved to customize rules. And like the other hardware firewalls here, the Linksys firewall doesn't display a blocked-service message; the request simply times out. Experienced users can enable application traffic via specific ports, create dynamic and static routes, and configure the hardware dmz port.
